Teluk Intan Road Trip, the Movie!

R.O.A.D.T.R.I.P.!

Yeah, you read it right! Road trip! Dad, Mum and me (from here on, this will be shortened to DMM) went on a road trip yesterday to Teluk Intan to see the Leaning Tower.

Not-so-bright and very early Sunday morning, DMM woke up at 5.30am and got ready for our trip. Armed with bottled water, sweets and Red Bull, we piled into the car. 2 hours later found us at Ipoh, having dim sum at Jalan Leong Sin Nam. The most famous dim sum place in Ipoh is arguably Foh San, but I preferred the place we went to. The name escapes me now, but it sound somewhere along the lines of Yoke Fook Mun. Though, we made a mistake and actually wanted to eat at Ming Court, which was on the opposite side of the same road. For those of you who are interested, this road is behind Excelsior Hotel.

After piling food into our stomachs, we continued on our journey using the old trunk road. We made a short stopover at Kellie’s Castle. The general reaction was “….That’s it?” But it did look pretty, from the outside. We didn’t go in because it would cost us money…hahahaha… KIAM SIAP!

Moving along, we made a discovery by the side of the road. There was a mining dredge that was kept as a historical monument. That thing was HUGE!! And I mean HUGE!! Humongous! Gigantic! Well, you get the idea.

Further along the road, we saw cows…and plants…and trees…and more plants….and less cars. By this time, I had nodded off to sleep. WHAT!? The greenery was very soothing on my eyes.

Opening my eyes, we arrived at civilization. It’s a wonder how by taking a very looooong blink; you can arrive immediately at your destination. Parking the car at the side, we headed off on foot towards the Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan. It took a few minutes of eye-squinting, head-tilting and walking around the structure before DMM decided that yes, the tower was, in fact, leaning. We couldn’t help it! The tilt was MINIMAL! Taking a stroll inside, we found out that we could only go up 2 storeys. From the 3rd storey onwards, it was a water tank. It was heartening to see that most of the ‘tourists’ were Malaysians.

Moving along, we headed over to the Leaning Tower Complex, where there were shops. Due to the fact that it was the second day of Hari Raya, most of the shops were closed. We didn’t leave empty-handed though. Stumbling upon and spectacle shop offering 50% discounts off their sunglasses, Dad and I got a pair of sunnies each. Dad got himself a pair of polarized Ray Ban while I got a pair of polarized Polaroid sunnies.

Ironically, we ate KFC for lunch. Then we went along our merry way back home using the scenic route. I got to be the navigator! Whee! Based on the Perak map, I told Dad, “Follow Route 5 until you get to Sitiawan. Then continue on Route 5 until you see signboards that show Route 71. After Route 71, get on Route 73 and finally Route 60 will get us out at Changkat Jering and back onto the North-South Highway.”

Unfortunately, due to some errors on the map (yes, it’s the map’s fault. NOT MINE!), we ended up immediately on Route 60. But I guess it was all right, since we were on the right (final) route. And now, we cut to the end of the trip because yours truly nodded off again.

Dinner was at Chok Dee, AutoCity! WHEE!! I love that place! Best deep fried kangkong EVER! And of course, great Thai food. But the deep fried kangkong, YUM! Finally, we got home at 9.30pm. Dad and Mum pottered off to bed while I (fully rested and hyper) went off for supper with my friends.

Warning: Emo post. I need to write something. Pretty pointless. Lots of rambling. Will make no sense to anyone but me.

I've always liked to think that someone up there has my back. I'm lucky. Really. Like you wouldn't believe. Blessed, some might say. What do I say? Loved. Yeah, that's right. Loved. Loved by family, loved by friends. Does it mean that being on a constant high, the drops will be much harder? The disappointments will be much harder to take?

Am I too optimistic? I always thought I was pretty confident in myself. The whole sticks and stone may break my bones, but words will never hurt me philosophy kinda fit my character. I've pretty much ignored what people have had to say about me. I'd laugh it off. I'd shrug and say that they have no idea who I really was.

Do people really know me? Do I really know myself? Is my jolly disposition a farce? Am I so good that I've tricked myself? Have I lost what is essentially ME? Did something go wrong somewhere along the way? Did I get lost and never made my way out of the darkness?

Why do I suddenly have so many questions? Why am I so easily affected by one comment? Why won't the rain stop?

Family has been the main pillar of my strength. I always have somewhere to turn to. A reassuring smile, a hug. All those little things that make a person's life worth living. In the darkest jungle, where danger lurks at every step, they're like a giant flourescent marshmallow man. Kinda corny, but when you see it, you get that warm and fuzzy feeling all over.

I've kept to a small group of true friends. Friends I can say anything to. We may fight, we may argue. Give us a 5 minute time out and we'll be laughing our asses off at each other after that. I rebound pretty fast, don't you think?

Then why have I never rebounded from this? Why is this wound so easily opened up? Was it ever closed? Or have I chosen to ignore it?

I really thought I was over it. Case closed, locked in a chest, tied to a boulder and dropped into the deepest ocean. Then why does it resurface like a bouy every time the subject is broached?

I know it. I understand. I really do. The remarks were not meant to hurt me. Usually, I'd just laugh it off, as I always do. But why does it hurt me so? Why do all the memories keep flooding back? Memories I have no intention of revisiting? Some of the darkest moment of my short life.

A part of me that no one knows. No one has any idea exists in me. Save for a few who I have recently shared with. I thought I was past it, that I could finally look back and talk about it with a smile and a shake of the head. How silly I was back then.

I thought wrong. The wounds are still there. The hurt is masked, but still very much alive.

Time. I'll give it more time. It's been forever since it happened. I can wait some more. I just need to give it time. Yeah, that's what it needs. Time. Time to heal. No wound stays open forever. It may be longer than I initially thought. But I'll get over it. I'll be able to smile at it. Some time. Not now. Some time in the future. I'm sure I'll be able to.

Because someone up there has got my back. And most importantly, because I'm loved.

Dad's Operation

こんばんわ！

Dad's mouth had been hurting for a few days, causing him to lose sleep and his appetite. So, after much prodding (with a ten-foot-pole equipped with a very sharp end), Dad finally relented and saw our family dentist. Dr Tai said that after extracting a tooth, Dad's jaw went berserk and decided to pile on a heck of a lot of calcium. It caused a buildup of jawbone that poked up through Dad's gums, causing the excruciating pain.

So, Dr Tai suggested Dad see a proper doctor to have the bone filed off. Dad and Mom decided to see the doctor at the Loh Guan Lye Specialist Centre today. I didn't go, because it was supposed to be a check-up before the doctor decided what to do.

I spent a couple of hours at home, watching TV and napping while my parents went to the hospital. After a few hours, Dad and Mom came home. Dad looked exhausted and very dishelved.

Me: Wah! What happened to you?! Got caught in a tornado?
Dad: *shakes head*
Mom: It's the operations fault.
Me: ..........
Me: The op is OVER?! o.O
Dad: *nod*
Mom: Yeap. All done.
Me: I thought you were just going to have it looked at! COOL! So he hacked off the extra bone with a hammer and chisel?
Dad: -__-;;

Now, Dad has to bear the post-op pain. He'll have to eat porridge for now, until his mouth heals.
Mwahahaha... It'll be so much fun to torture him by chewing delicious food in front of him.

Now, excuse me while I torture my Dad... *evil cackle*

Delayed Holiday Report

So...Let's see. I went to Cameron Highlands last weekend with my family. わい～！休みだ！
My "report" on the holidays was delayed because yours truly was such a genius to eat lok-lok before the trip, causing a terrible bout of food poisoning. Genius, right?　僕は　ばかだよね

Anyway, back to the holiday. We went to Cameron Highlands for a short break. You KNOW you need holidays when you start working. It keeps you sane, I swear!

So, Cameron was all nice and cooling...There isn't much to tell about the drive up....Lots of green stuff at the roadside called trees and plants. Maybe we saw a few orang asli (indigenous people) running around, but none of them were naked, so yeah...rather uneventful.

After checking in and eating a nice lunch, we went about exploring the place and visiting all the flower gardens, flower shops etc.

For those in the dark, Cameron Highlands in Malaysia is famous for its laidback lifestyle, where the main attractions are the flowers, strawberries and vegetables. The cool highland air seems to make the agricultural products grow better. And because of the cool air, you get nice strawberries and flowers/plants that you wouldn't be able to grow elsewhere in our tropical country.　花はきれい、いちごはおいし。

After all the nice scenery, we had dinner at Ye Olde Smoke House (only 2 restaurants in Malaysia) and then went to the night market. There, we bought 3 money plants. 2 with big leaves for Mom and Dad and one pot with smaller leaves for me. You see, we have this idea that the big leaves are the RM100 notes while the smaller leaves are the RM50 notes. I'm greedy, yes...but I'm smart enough to start small *wink* But I've got a trick up my sleeve. The money plant with the smaller leaves has very many more leaves than its bigger-leaved cousins, so I get loads of money as well *evil cackle* MWAHAHAHAHAHA　僕の頭がいいよね！

The next day, we went to a temple nearby. There, we saw around 15 people crowding around a koi/carp pond within the temple compound. Curious, Dad and I sneaked up on them. There, we figured out that if you can touch a koi or carp in the pond, it was supposed to be an auspicious sign. So, there was this group of people, with their hands in the pond, chasing fish. Those fishes were a wily bunch...They'd swim near, and when you reached out, they'd swim just out of your reach...

Dad and I decided to try our luck as well. After the group cleared off, we stuck our hands into the pond, letting the fishes get used to our hands before trying to swat them. Dad managed to touch 12. Pretty impressive, considering the earlier group of people couldn't touch any. Not wanting to get left in the dust, I relaxed my hand and waited for fish. Suddenly, this golden koi came up... I waited for it to get closer, so that it wouldn't be able to swim out of my reach. As it got closer, I got ready to swat it. Just before I moved my hand, it swam up and BIT MY FINGER!! Wha..wha...what?!?!?! Frankly, I was just dumbstruck. I just got bitten by an auspicious fish. A gold one, at that!! So, what does this mean? Am I more auspicious than the fish? Or is Lady Luck letting me know that luck will come to me? I'm confused.　どちがいい？

After that, we took lunch and went home. On the way back, all I did was sleep, because the food poisoning had began to show symptoms. After that, well...it wasn't very pretty so I'll just leave that unsaid.

BOMB SCARE!!

Wow!! Yesterday was SSSSOOOOOOO exciting! There I was, at work...when Stef buzzed me on MSN, asking me if the Penang Bridge was closed. Oh, for those of you who don't know, the Penang Bridge is the only link (besides taking the ferry) from the mainland to Penang Island. Right, so everyday, it's always jam-packed with vehicles traveling to and fro. Closing even one LANE on the bridge would cause a massive jam. So, imagine my surprise to hear that the WHOLE bridge was closed.

A quick call to my Dad, who works on the mainland, confirmed the fact that the bridge was closed. The conversation actually took a funny turn:

Me: I heard that the bridge is closed!
Dad: Yeap. Closed. Bomb threat.
Me: Bomb threat?! So where are you? Went home early to avoid the massive jam?
Dad: Still at the office.
Me: Then?! How are you getting home?
Dad: Wait lor. What else to do?
Me: Ferry?
Dad: Will definitely be jammed to the max.
Me: Oh......Sooooo......
Dad: So, wait here lor.
Me: Oh...OK then... See ya later...If they open the bridge, that is.
*hangs up*
Me (thinks): The poor terrorist either can't read a map to save his life...Or the Penang Brigde resembles the London Bridge...somehow...unlikely though...

So, I went home and sat on the balcony with a pair of binoculars, keeping tabs on the bridge. As soon as I saw vehicles, I called Dad and he drove like a demon to avoid all the jam that would build up once everyone else got the call.

In the evening news, it was said that an assemblyman got an anonymous call that there was a bomb at KM3.9 of the bridge. Police were informed and mobilized to the scene. There, they found a 0.3m long homemade bomb. And so, they used a robot to detonate it at the scene and all is right with the world again. WAIT A MINUTE!! PENANG HAS A BOMB DISPOSAL ROBOT? WHERE? WHERE? Wow....I'm impressed... o.O Why do we need a bomb disposal robot in the first place anyway? We're a peaceful, happy, hippy, laidback island... Nothing bad happens to us...

Edit: In today's newspapers... The police have said that there was NO BOMB found on the Penang Bridge. It was only a steel pipe wedged under the divider. It's most probably from a kangaroo bar. It's still under investigation. But, they DID detonate it anyway, with the robot... AND THEY SHOWED THE ROBOT in the papers!! Wow... As a Penangite, I feel all cool and hip now. And we've had the robot for 2 years already.

All-England Men's Doubles won by Malaysian pair of Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong!!

Aaaah!! I'm so deliriously happy, this post isn't going to make much sense at the moment!!
Barely 10 minutes ago, the Malaysian badminton men's doubles pair of Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong WON the All-England Championships!
The last time Malaysia won this competition was 25 years ago (!!) in 1982. The pair then were Razif and Jalani Sidek (brothers).

But, back to Kien Keat and Boon Heong. My goodness, it was a nail-biting game. I therefore apologize now to my family and neighbors for all the squealing, screaming and jumping I did during the game. Sumimasen deshita.

KKK-TBH were up against Hu Haifeng-Cai Yun from China. The Chinese pair won the All-England men's doubles in 2005. They are also the current world champions. Add in the fact that KKK-TBH were only formed as a pair 6 months ago, and you have a miracle!! A wonderful, beautiful, delicious miracle!

Kudos to KKK-TBH for their chemistry and wonderful shots throughout the game. The score was 21-15 and 21-18. It showed how much work this pair had put in to achieve as much as they have in the short time they've been together. And we expect to see much more from this young pair, as Boon Heong is only 19 while Kien Keat is 21.

The only gripe I have is the lack of Malaysian VIPs at the tournament. Not a single minister/politician was seen there. And it's the country's chance to win a trophy in 25 years!! Shouldn't (at least) the Sports Minister be there to support our countrymen? I have to say that I'm very, very disappointed at that.

But have heart, Kien Keat and Boon Heong, you have our (the Malaysian people's) support! Cheers and may you have many more successes in the future! Next up, we'll be cheering for your triumph in the world championships in August. And then, gambare for the 2008 Beijing Olympics!

On that note, I leave you, my fellow Malaysians, to savor this moment. I do want to add a small disclaimer, as I am delirious with happiness, the score may be wrong. Well, I can't pay attention while I'm jumping up and down and bouncing around with joy, now, can I? And I apologize for the grainy pictures, I shall edit this post with better pictures at a later time.

Trivia: Koo Kien Keat has vowed to shave his head (totally bald) should Malaysia win this title. We'll miss his colorful hairstyle, but we're also waiting to see how hot he'll look bald!

Hono-o-Daiko and Tokyo Dageki Dan

Hono-o-Daiko and Tokyo Dageki Dan. Istana Budaya, Kuala Lumpur. Two hours of non-stop excitement.

That’s what I was doing on Saturday night. Yours truly was fortunate enough to get tickets to the Japanese Drum Concert, Beating and Blazing organized by the Japan Foundation KL and The Embassy of Japan. The show featured two groups of world-renowned drummers.

First was the all-female group, Hono-o-Daiko, consisting Jige Akemi, Kinoshita Chieko and Yamada Mizue.

Next was the all-male group of Tokyo Dageki Dan. This group consists of 6 members, Kato Takuya, Sekine Makoto, Yokoyama Ryousuke, Murayama Jiro, Tagawa Tomofumi and Tsuyuki Kazuhiro.

Hono-o-Daiko was flawless in their drumming techniques and managed to get the audience to give them a standing ovation for the sheer power and intensity of their performance. Jige Akemi-san was the most expressive drummer, dancing in beat to the music and getting the audienced hyped-up with shouts and powerful drumming. Kinoshita Chieko-san was elegant in her hand movements but there was no mistaking the power of her beats on the drum. Yamada Mizue-san AMAZED me with her sheer stamina. I was staring at her hitting the drums, fast and furious, and wincing, thinking of the burning of her arms. It’s no wonder that her arms are so well-toned. Hono-o-Daiko has done 2 world tours and have an album to their name, “The Hono-o-Daiko Sound”. They have also represented japan in many cultural performances all over the world.

Tokyo Dageki Dan. Where do I start? They came on strong and left an impression with the audience with their versatility and improvisations. Each member stepped forward for a minute to show off their skills. They were more creative and less conventional than Hono-o-Daiko, with costume changes and a short funny skit before their performance entitled “Cross”. And it definitely helped a lot for yours truly to gawk and drool at their perfectly sculpted arms in their sleeveless costumes. Unfortunately, sitting so high up in the hall, I was unable to see their faces clearly, so I can’t give personal comments regarding their drumming styles. There was also a difference in Tokyo Dageki Dan’s repertoire, as Murayama Jiro-san performed a Shino-Bue flute solo. It was a refreshing change of pace to the intense drumming. The melody was haunting and you could not help but close your eyes and be caught up with the music. Tokyo Dageki Dan was founded by Kiranuma Jin-ichi in 1995. They performed with the Korean National Dance Troupe at the closing ceremony of the FIFA World Cup in France. They have also performed a European tour and performed in Africa.

I’m actually a few days late in updating this. Hopefully I still remember how the dream went. So, I had this seriously whacked out dream on Saturday night. Why? I have no idea. I shall just chalk this up to my hyperactive imagination.

It started of fairly decently. I was going to have a pool party at this HUMONGOUS mansion. Whom does the mansion belong to? Your guess is as good as mine. Anyhow, there I was, sitting nicely at my writing desk in my room with an open window in front of me. Romping around in the garden were my two tigers, Ashura and Yuki. Ashura is, well, your usual Asian tiger with a grumpy attitude. Yuki is a white Bengal tiger that’s playful and likes to pounce on people and lick them. On the writing desk was a stack of invitation cards. The card itself was black with silver and gold decorations.

[Brain yells: CUT! Ok, next seen! Aaaaand…. ACTION!]

So the food is all prepared properly on a long table set up near the pool. The music’s on and the bubbles are bubbling away in the jacuzzi. I’m just putting the finishing touches on the decorations and making sure the bar is well-stocked. Of course, there’s the customary hot hunk of a bartender there as well. He’s dressed in an ancient Greek sort of costume. At least, I think it’s ancient Greek. It’s all white and made from a single piece of cloth. Sleeveless (showing off perfectly toned arms), plunging neckline (nice chest!) and a bottom that sort of ends in a short skirt (showing off wonderfully well-muscled legs and just a hint of a nice, perky butt) with sandals.

[CUT! Stop drooling over the bartender guy. Actually, this part is rather PG-18]

This next part is rather choppy. Think of a doorbell ringing, the front door opening and different people appearing with different costume. And repeat. On loop. OK, doorbell rings, front door opens, Stef appears dressed as an apple, holding a bottle of Mondavi (the ultimate double sin!). Next, Pauline appears in her dinner dress she bought for Chia Yee’s sister’s wedding dinner (but oddly enough, she had a tail). Then, Chia Yee and Bin Bin appeared in identical angel get-ups (black suits with cool shades, wings on the back and a halo above their heads). *ding dong* Yen Ling appears in a yellow rubber ducky costume. Doreen dressed as a schoolgirl (no, not the Malaysian kind…the naughty Japanese/US kind). Huan Lin came as a pro wrestler kind of thing (think Nacho Libre). *door opens* Jit Sheng in a lion get-up, complete with long, luscious mane (*braids said luscious mane*). Hannah came as a gothic lolita rock chick. Mike flashed by (as a camera).
The next doorbell just happened to be my alarm.

Now, I’d be REALLY grateful if anyone could tell me the whole point of this dream.

In Loving Memory

Sigh...It is with deep regret and sadness that I announce the death of our beloved guinea pig, which I named Fai. She's a young guinea pig that the lab bought as a pet and companion to another guinea pig which I named Kuro (because he's black...duh. Fai quickly became our favourite guinea pig for her small size and her utter cuteness and femininity. She was always ready to sit on my lap and eat her alfalfa quietly. Always curious to see who opens her cage door (and subsequently give her food). Aaahh...we'll miss you dearly, Fai!

Should you wonder where I got the names from, Fai is Fai D. Flowright from Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle and Kuro is also from Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle and is named after Kurogane. And yes, I'm a fangirl of the KuroFai pairing (^_^)b

First off, a very hearty "OMEDETOU GOZAIMASU!!" ~"CONGRATULATIONS!"~ to my cousin, Yew Chong and his wife, Wai Wan, on the new addition to their family!! Wai Wan gave birth to a baby girl at 10.30 this morning at Island Hospital. They have a 3-year old daughter in Yue Lynn. The new baby girl will be named Yue Wen. Yue Wen weighed in at 3.41kg! Wow!

I'm an aunt again!! Yay!!
My parents and I went to visit Wai Wan at the hospital earlier. She's looking all happy and perky already! Energeticnya! She'll be discharged on Tuesday and stay at a confinement centre for a month...

Many congratulations again to the happy parents!

Well, this week was quite eventful…Chia Yee is back for 2 weeks so we’re trying to keep it as action-packed as possible…

The picture says it all, doesn’t it? I’m sorry the quality isn’t too good, my camera phone is a dinosaur (by phone-years, of course). But you can clearly see Yew San crying because Ronald McD refused to let him sit on his lap. Hmm…Yew San, don’t worry…I’m sure Colonel Sanders won’t mind you sitting on HIS lap!

VANITY SIGNS

In the States, they can personalize their car number plates. In Malaysia, we don’t have that luxury so we have the next best thing, Vanity Signs. I’m sure you know what I mean, those yellow signs we stick on the car that says “Honk if you’re horny”, “Don’t’ follow me, I’m lost too” etc etc. I came across this gem of a sign the other day. It says, “This is a stupid yellow sign”…haha…Kawaii deshou? ~Isn't it cute~ It put a smile on my face as I went by. I hope it put a smile on your face as you read this too.

LESSONS FROM MAHJONG

My relatives have come over often to the house to have rounds of mahjong. And I dare say, it has been an eye opener to all the little rituals related to playing mahjong. Among the little rituals practiced if you’re not winning:

i. Stand up, turn your chair a full 360° then sit down again

ii. Go to the toilet for at least 3 minutes

iii. Move the table

iv. Make chopping gestures at the player who is dominating

v. Throw the dice from in between the mahjong tiles

vi. Get something with teeth to bite the player who is dominating (examples are below)

vii. Leave the table, take a short walk then return.

viii. Make sprinkling gestures to the dominating player

ix. Wash hands in the bathroom

x. Grab the dice from the other person

xi. If everyone goes for a walk, make sure you are not the first to sit back at the table

xii. Bring eggs to the table in hopes of getting more Jokers

xiii. Make random noises at the dominating player, for example “Hoi!” “Cheh!” etc etc.

xiv. Rub the dice vigorously before throwing them

xv. Keep the dice and pretend you have no idea who’s having them

xvi. Wear yellow, red or any colour that gives off “ong” vibes

xvii. Count the numbers on the dice wrongly

Hmm...That’s all I can think of right now. If anyone has any other little rituals they would like to share, you know what to do! Leave a comment and maybe we’ll compile a list and publish a book on this!

I know I haven’t been updating my blog for almost a month. Gomen ne! ~Sorry~

I bet it’s feeling neglected. So basically, I’ve resurfaced to write down some stuff.

WORK

I’m working…Or not…Depends how you look at it, I guess. I’ve started work but since the laboratory isn’t ready and there’s NO equipment, I can’t do shiatz. So, my boss said: “Why don’t you wait at home? There’s nothing to do here anyway. I’ll call you once the lab is ready.” So I’ve been sitting around, getting fat while waiting for that call. Well, not exactly. I’ve been given homework (reading-up on materials) to do at home. But seriously, how many people can study at home? There’s too much distraction…But being the good girl I am, I’ve finished reading up. Maybe I should give my boss a call and ask for more books…Hmmm…..

RANTING *Sensitive political material. Do not read unless you want to*

I’ve been paying more attention to world news and such more lately, due to lack of work. So, I read the newspapers back-to-back, word-for-word and also watch some news on the shiny talking tube.

Recently, there’s this big hoo-haa over Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi’s visit to the Yasukuni Shrine. Okay, so I wasn’t alive yet during the Japanese Occupation of Malaya and didn’t see the atrocities that they committed. So, I’m not emotionally attached to this piece of news. The move by President Koizumi was seen as Japan going back to it’s militarism past.

Sometimes, I fail to understand these symbolisms. I mean,
(1) President Koizumi visited the shrine that not only houses class-A war criminals but also the WAR DEAD. Going to a jinja ~shrine~ to pray for the dead is not something bad. The shrine also has the chrysanthemum crest on it’s door. The chrysanthemum is the royal crest of Japan, so Yasukuni Shrine is possibly a national shrine. At the very least, it’s an important shrine to bear the royal crest. So, he’s not going there just because there are war criminals there.
(2) The fact that he visited the shrine at the END date of WW2, when Japan surrendered. Read again, END! I believe it would be more symbolic of Japan returning to it’s militarism past if the Japanese visit the shrine at the BEGINNING date of WW2.
(3) Who in their right mind would pray for war?! At a shrine?! Wouldn’t you be afraid of getting struck by lighting or some karma-tic action by God? And do we see the Japanese running around with their katanas, shouting “Former glory! We want more war?” It was a solemn ceremony. People go there to pay their respects. Even if you are a Class-A war criminal, aren’t you are also someone’s son, someone’s brother, someone’s father? Is it wrong for families to mourn the dead? Just because he made a mistake in life, we should ignore him and wipe him off the face of the Earth? They’re dead. It’s the past. Let’s move on.
(4) If u want to see militarism? Look on over at the Middle East. Isn’t a certain country trying to impose its will and doctrines on other countries? The road to hell is paved with good intentions. I don’t see the Japanese rolling their troops and tanks and weapons into another country. I won’t say anymore. You get what I mean.

CONVOCATION

Oh! I’ve graduated. Had my convocation a few weeks back. Um….Rather uneventful. Though I DID doze off in the hall. I dozed of when someone was going up to receive his/her scroll and then I woke up half an hour later to see someone else receive his/her scroll. Go figure. Then it was back home to take studio photos! Yay!!

Okay…I think I’ve overloaded my blog this time around! I hope no one was offended by any of my opinions above.These are NOT facts, just my opinions.

Clan Gathering Part II

Once upon a time, in a land far, far awa….hmm? what’s that? Ooohhhh!!! Oops, wrong story….let’s start again…

At 7.30pm, everyone met at Penang Swimming Club amid much fanfare (by us, of course. The other guests were very quiet. They are normal.) I bet the restaurant had a premonition, as they put us in a little corner away from the main crowd. But, of course, their best efforts were ALL IN VAIN!!! Mwahahahahaah….

Right, back to the narration. We took up 3 tables, and the food came in this order:

4 seasons cold dishes
Sharks’ fin soup (tang hoon actually, no sharks were harmed in this process)
Duck (Chicken for one table)
Spicy Prawns
Steamed Siakap
Broccoli with mushroom
Fried Rice in Lotus leaves
Dessert : Mango pudding

In between mouthfuls, various degrees of noise, hyena-like laughs and not-so-hyena-like laughs floated from the tables. To the main event: (drum roll) THE LUCKY DRAW!!

We had our very own MC: Amy Wong *applause* with her hilarious cheng ju yi (Canto: your attention please). Her voice was shrilly (think hiau po) and her butt bopped from side to side when she walked. I’m pretty sure the neighboring tables were stifling their laughter and watching on in amusement. We just laughed out loud….All in the name of good fun! Clan gathering would be so boring without wackos.

The lucky draw went like this: Ellina, Chee Keen and yours truly cut the paper, wrote the names and dumped it all into a bowl. This was all done unbiased and was QC-ed by the donator of the prize (ie Auntie Sin). All those who were present had one vote each, and Auntie Fong’s and Szu Ping’s name were in the bowl as well. Those who were absent for various reasons, nyeh nyeh nee boo boo...too bad, so sad...Who ask u not to join the gathering? *poot*

Rules are dead simple:

If your name gets drawn, u DO NOT get the prize.
Person who’s name gets drawn, draws the next name.
It goes on and on and on until…..
Last person’s name in the bowl WINS!!

Unfortunately, the game got a bit long (what to do? Total of more than 30 names in the bowl). So halfway through, my Dad (Chee Weng) decided that we would draw the last 3 names and the final name of the 3 drawn will win the fancie-blankie.

So, finally, teng teng teng teng…… the last name was…………………………………ELLINA WONG!!!

So it ended with a group picture in the carpark and great memories. Hope u enjoyed me using up so much of your time to read this long-winded story!

Okay....so who says the elder generation is clueless when it comes to the Internet and stuff like that? My relatives (read: older than me by a generation) are the techo-savviest 'matured' people I know....They communicate via e-mail most of the time, eg. family gatherings, weird stories etc etc. Of course, they check the news, get their winning 4D numbers and such online too....And not to mention, burning out golden oldies and songs of yester-years....So, I challenge anyone to meet my family if u don't believe 'matured' poeple are hopeless with IT... Watashi no ichizoku wa sugoi yo! ~My clan is great, u know!~ Don't play-play!!

And it's also great when u have techno-savvy relatives...You'll never have to worry about losing touch or feel guilty of not spendig enough time with them....They're just an e-mail away...All in all, techno-savvy relatives ROCK!! hmm....This morning I had breakfast with a group of friends. We had Bak Kut Teh at Sungai Dua at 9am. After that, just when I thought I could escape back home for some shut-eye after watching Japan vs Brazil at 3am, they had other ideas. They dragged me kicking and screaming to one of those cybercafes to play games.....

That was how I was introduced to huge pandas running around in woods with lanterns, suicidal chibis, big dragon-like supermunching machines....DotA no sekai e yokoso! ~Welcome to the world of DotA~

All in all, it was a fun experience, though I kept getting bullied....I kept dying every 5 minutes...no thanks to Yew San, the maniacal stalker....I swear! That guy must be following me around, just to kill me...EVERY TIME!!! But in the end, WE WON!!!! Coz we rock!! *blek to the losing team* Anata tachi wa yowai yo!! ~U guys are weak!~

Hmm...let's see....I think I can remember the names from the game well enough:
the Sentinels team were Yew San, Siong Hu, Zack and Stephen while the Scourges team were Hanley, Nern Hoong, Huan Lin and me....well, I didn't do much, just ran around a lot, died a lot and maybe killed a few here and there....but oh! I was so happy...I kept killing Siong Hu!! Which is fun after I kept dying at the hands of Yew San...grrrrrr *bars teeth at him*

oooohhhhh.....i'm shivering with delight...Went to see this AWESOME movie yesterday, The Fast & The Furious: Tokyo Drift....spent the whole time in the cinema drooling over the beautiful cars and not to mention an extremely handsome Japanese guy...OMG!!! I fell in lust with him when I saw the trailer for the movie....now I'm TOTALLY in lust with him!! ahhahahahaha....

The drifting scenes were UNBELIEVABLE!!! I wish I could drift....nah...I'd probably crash and break a few limbs...not to mention my parents breaking my neck after that... But back to my Japanese hunk...he's unmistakable!! He appears for only a few seconds but trust me, he's worth the movie ticket!

Hmm...in the first race that Sean (the main character aka protagonist aka hero) takes part in against the resident DK (Drift King) of Tokyo, a guy flags off the race...a GUY, mind u, not a girl! He's dressed in a white shirt with the collar unbuttoned and a black jacket over it. He says "Yokoso!" ~Welcome~ and then starts the race...he is just kakoui ~cool~ personified! Even my guys friend who were watching with me agree he's super cool...

Of course, we should not forget all the hot chicks u guys will be able to enjoy during the movie...hmmm...i should complain...so many hot chicks, not enough hot guys....

But, back to my hot guy...(I get distracted sooo easily) Can u believe his role in the credits? "Exceedingly handsome guy" HAH!! Even the directors know he's sooo hot...Unfortunately, I missed his name *wail wail wail* *bangs head against silver screen* but I did see it was Satoshi (fill in blank with surname).....Satoshi-sama, DAISUKI!!! ~I love u, Satoshi~

MY LAPPY DIED!!!

sigh...i've disappeared for some time, mainly because my laptop got infected with a virus and i had to reformat...but now, everything's back to normal, thanks to my bro, Piko...muah muah muah...u're my saviour, man!! Domo arigatou gozaimashita!! ~thank u very much~

REDANG DAY 2

oh yeah....day two was really great...we went out snorkelling TWICE!! Once in the morning and another time in the afternoon. The first dive was very much nicer than the previous day's experience. The water was so much clearer and i got to hold a clownfish in my hands!! That's Nemo, if you're wondering...The guide caught the fish and let me hold it for a few seconds...That was SO COOL!!! When I let ot go, it went "swish!!!" back into the sea anemone at the corals. There were less ppl on the dive too (many couldn't wake up for the dive) so we got to see more of the corals and less legs and bodies... I accidentally smashed my leg on a coral and got a small gash on my ankle... Choto itai desu yo. ~It hurt a bit~

That didn't stop me from going out to see baby sharks! The nursery cove was near our accomodations so we went by ourselves to see the baby sharks. They were black tip reef sharks, and WOW!! they were beautiful...We even swam further out into the sea to look at them...When we got back to shore, we were told something really, REALLY spine-chilling. The mother sharks are known to be out in deeper waters, just a few meters from where we were....yikes...A grown black-tip reef shark is about my size!! Talk about drama in the high seas!! Thankfully, Mom decided to stay away and we left with all appendages attached and our bllod safely in our bodies.
The afternoon dive was beautiful, as usual. Then came dinner and finally we played mahjong til the wee hours of the morning before dreaming of baby sharks. This is where the sharks are found:

GREAT NASI KANDAR

A new nasi kandar place just opened recently below my condo...The food is excellent and I reccommend the place to EVERYBODY!! It's opposite USM on the Bukit Gambir side, next to the new student hostel. The name is Nasi Kandar Istimewa, NOT Khaleel Nasi Kandar... Check it out and enjoy! Hontoni oishi desu! ~really very delicious~

Rain...Gloom...Rain...FISHIES!!

aaah...been to Pulau Redang recently...since it'll b pretty long if i said everything in one post, I've decided to split it up by day.

Well, we arrived on the 22nd of May 2006. Had an overnight bus ride from Penang to Kuala Terengganu Tanjung Bus Station, a total of 8 hours in the bus...ZZZzzzz......Left at 9pm and arrived at 5am. Haaaa...Tsukaretta na! ~tiring~ Then had a Globetrekker moment when we were left in a house to freshen up with a whole bunch of other people.

At 8am we left for Merang Jetty to take a boat to Redang Island....It wasn't the best boat ride...The weather was rainy and the sea was pretty choppy....Even the young ppl who were in the same boat became silent and green-faced 10mins into the ride...haha...

REJOICE!!! The island is in sight!! After checking in and taking a short rest, we left for the Redang Marine Park. FISHIES GALORE!!! And an eel!!! SUGOI!! ~wonderful~ I was like a kid in a candy store!! Had a blast diving down and trying to chase fishes...Unfortunately, not all my pictures turned out nicely...But the experience itself was worth it.

Night saw us wolfing down bucketloads of food. Then we had a walk along the beach, played a little mahjong before retiring to bed...Surprisingly, the bed seemed to rock like the sea...hmm....

Had wonderful dreams of fishes and the vast sea.....Oyasumi! ~g'nite~

Revenge of the relatives

Sighs......After a full day of playing gin rummy at my house yesterday, my relatives are back today for revenge!! So, more time for me to write this post and have lots of fun jumping from each relatives' place to check out their tiles ove their shoulders....and in the process, make some undetectable hints for my Dad to see....wakakakakaka...nah, i'm not that much of a cheater....i'll let the older generation have their fun...

Do u realize that elderly ppl tend to become senile faster if they don't do work or have some activity....so isn't it nice if they can flex their grey matter playing mahjong and stuff? No, REALLY! Have u played mahjong before? It requires a LOT of brain power to outwit the other 3 players...So, for the mental health of the elderly citizens, we should encourage them to play mahjong when they're free!!! YAY!!! Mahjong BANZAI!! ~Long live mahjong~

Delish Malay Char Koay Teow

Aaaahhhh...bliss....Just went to have the most delicious malay char koay teow in Penang....Tottemo oishi desu yo!! ~absolutely delicious~ It tastes like normal char koay teow...u'd never believe they didn't use 'bak eu pok' (pork fat)! If u ever get the chance to try it, GO!!! My sense of direction is pretty bad so I can't direct u there...but try asking around....Penang ppl would know it....
But eating supper means I have to go to the gym tomorrow!!! *cry cry cry* " I don't like manual labour!!! U can't make me!! U can't...U can't...Nooooooooooooooo" *sound of treadmill starting and running feet*

Finally back from my weary travels

Konbanwa, minna san!

Today I FINALLY got back home after a weary but wonderfully fun 3 years in university.... Sigh...Home never felt so good....All the food I've missed...All the luxuries of home...But it was a bittersweet moment, leaving uni for the last time...Didn't bring a tear to my eye but there was a moment of sadness...I'll probably visit my uni whenever I can, just think back on all the things I did and the friends I made.

But, nothing beats the comfort of home...Yappari jibun no ie wa ichiban desu yo! ~without a doubt, my own house is still the best~

Leaving uni also got me thinking of what I'll be doing with my life...Will I be successful in life? Will I lead a satisfying and full life? Will I be cursed by fate to sleep under a bridge? Hmm....okay, that last one is quite impossible....a flyover would be more probable....

Choto shitsure ne, ~excuse me for a bit~ while I think of all the possibilities of messing up my life or living an easy and blissful life..I shall update later on all the possible possibilities....
